North Ridgeville Police Department has built a “comfort room” to conduct interviews with assault victims.

“The North Ridgeville Police Department is proud to announce the opening of a newly designed soft interview room, made possible through Project Beloved, a nonprofit organization that focuses on empowering sexual assault survivors,” the department stated in a news release.

Project Beloved was founded by Tracy Matheson, the mother of 22-year-old Molly Jane, who was raped and murdered in her Fort Worth, Texas, apartment on April 10, 2017, according to the release. Molly Jane’s killer, Reginald Kimbro, went on to rape and murder a second woman, Megan Getrum, just days later.

Prior to those murders, several women brought forward complaints against Kimbro, including rape and strangulation, but those charges were either dropped or dismissed.

In 2022, Kimbro plead guilty to murdering the two women and raping four others.

Matheson has turned her grief into purpose with Project Beloved, by helping transform more than 100 police department interview rooms nationwide into softer spaces for victims to share details of their traumatic experiences.

The goal of the transformation is to bring warmth to an area that will be used exclusively for victims and intentionally designed to be a comforting environment during the reporting process, the release also stated.

Project Beloved provided everything needed for the redecoration, from “cozy furnishings to thoughtful décor and design plans,” the release stated.

“One especially meaningful touch includes canvases for the walls featuring photos taken by Megan Getrum, who was also tragically murdered by the same offender who took Molly’s life,” the release stated. “Megan was an amateur photographer, and now her work hangs in police departments across the United States, bringing serenity to a safe space.”

“The North Ridgeville Police Department would like to thank Project Beloved,” the release also stated. “It was a pleasure to work with Tracy, and to learn more about their story and mission.”
