The Conyers Police Department Criminal Investigations Division partnered with Project Beloved, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault, to transform the department’s soft interview room into a more welcoming, trauma-informed space.
“The project began with a fresh coat of paint in a softer, more calming color to help create an environment that feels less intimidating for survivors,” a Conyers Police Department social media post read.
On Wednesday, July 22, local volunteers joined Conyers Police detectives to unpack and install new furniture, artwork and décor designed to further enhance the room and provide a safe, comfortable setting for survivor interviews.
This initiative was spearheaded by Det. Alexus Brooks, who reached out to Project Beloved after attending specialized training on trauma-informed investigations involving survivors of sexual assault.
“Her efforts helped bring this meaningful partnership to the Conyers Police Department and reflect our continued commitment to compassionate, survivor-centered care while conducting thorough and professional investigations,” the CPD said in a statement.
According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, sexual assault remains one of the most underreported crimes in the United States.
Creating a comfortable, trauma-informed interview environment can help reduce barriers to reporting, support survivors during the investigative process and strengthen the quality of investigations.
“The Conyers Police Department is grateful to Project Beloved and the local volunteers whose generosity and dedication helped create a space where survivors can feel safe, respected, and supported while speaking with detectives,” the CPD said in its social media post. “Together, these efforts strengthen our ability to serve victims with dignity, compassion, and professionalism.”
